What would you do with 10,000 hours?

This past Saturday I attended an amazing concert performed by the American Baroque Orchestra in New Haven,  and sat in the audience close to tears and in utter awe of the brilliance that night.    ABO, led by Artistic Director Mark Bailey, in its second year, is truly one of the best period-performance orchestras in the country.    (more…)

Your Questions

I can’t even tell you how many people have told me they’d like to write a book, but have questions on the process. What I thought might be kind of fun would be to take questions from y’all and address them here. So if there’s something you’d like to know about, drop by my Facebook page and post your question. I’ll answer (almost) anything.

And while you’re there, “Like” me.

Use Your Voice!

I love writing.  I do, and I can get lost for hours in the recesses of my own mind with nothing but some music playing on my speakers and the characters in my head.  But, and this is a huge but, I can’t stand writing the queries and synopses that must accompany my writing in The Search to Find an Agent.  I’d rather do just about anything than subject myself to that hell, and let me tell you dear reader, it is hell.   (more…)

Nothing is as important as the story

This past weekend I attended the Unicorn Writer’s Conference in Portland, CT – I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about the craft of writing – and while I’m still processing everything I experienced on Saturday,  I thought I’d share with you a couple things I learned, or rediscovered, over the course of my next few posts. Making Peace with Statler and Waldorf

I realized the other day I’ve been working on this novel for about a year.  One year!  And it’s driving me a little batty!  And that’s probably a pretty good explanation for my writer’s block right there – I’ve psyched myself out so completely, every time I sit down at my keyboard, I search tell myself I’m not in the mood, or check out what my friends are doing on Facebook, or… ooh!  what’s that shiny thing over there? (more…)

Trying Something New

I’ve painted myself into a corner.

Sixty-thousand words into this thing and all of a sudden I’m staring at a fairly solid Romance Novel with no good ending.  Or at least one I sure haven’t found yet in all this mess.  (more…)

Writing: A Workout for the Brain

I hate working out.  There, I’ve said it.  I hate it and most days I have to make myself put on my workout clothes and drive to the gym.  And like a child there is often a part of me arguing the entire time.  That no matter what the “experts” claim, that little bit of time spent lifting weights or on a treadmill going nowhere can’t possibly make a real difference. (more…)

Take Good Care Of My Baby

I’ve decided to go to the Unicorn Writer’s Conference in April—a full day meeting other writers and networking with agents is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time and I’m really excited!

I’m also making myself nuts! (more…)

Revelations

The inspiration for The Wisdom to Know the Difference came from part of a conversation that came to me when I was writing one day:

“I never told you why Shawna and I stopped seeing each other.  She… had a miscarriage.  She was about two months pregnant and she lost the baby…” (more…)
